Mission & Vision

Mission:Our mission is to conduct and support research, education, capacity building and advocacy that will further Uganda's contribution to the global search for a AIDS Vaccine and will support Uganda's efforts to accelerate HIV prevention especially in vulnerable and high risk groups

The UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program was established in 2001 as a collaborative partnership between the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health represented by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). The Program was developed to conduct a series of Phase I and II HIV vaccine trials and to conduct feasibility studies and other activities in preparation for future large scale HIV vaccine trials. All activities of the program are aligned with Uganda's national strategic framework on HIV and AIDS and they include:

  • HIV Vaccine research and development (R&D)
  • Community engagement and education
  • Support to healthcare and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) structures
  • Support for national and global advocacy
  • Publications and media outreach
  • Capacity building of the UVRI administrative core
  • Operations
